This browser-based utility adds the dithering effect to a PNG image. Dithering is used to create an illusion of richer color depth in images with a reduced color palette. With only a few hues in the color palette, the dithering algorithm can create an illusion of many complementary color shades in the image. This illusion is achieved by placing pixels of two colors in checkerboard patterns, thus visually creating a third or fourth color. By controlling the density of the checkerboard and the positions of dark or light pixels, dithering brings out details, shadows, and edges of image elements. The dither effect can even create good-looking images with only two colors in the palette (this is called binary dithering). Before dithering can be applied, you have to specify the size of the new color palette in the options. The program first quantizes the input PNG using the size of the new color palette and then applies one of nine dithering algorithms, which you can choose in the options. The new PNG in the output with have exactly the number of colors that you specified in the options. In this example, we add dithering to a PNG image of a coniferous tree and reduce the original color palette as much as possible to just two colors. The color reduction algorithm analyzes the image and finds that the two most popular colors are the conifer-green and silver-white and these are the two colors that go in the new quantized color palette. The dithering method that we use is Floyd-Steinberg and it takes the two colors in the color palette and scatters pixels in such a way to recreate as many details of the original PNG as possible.
