This browser-based program adds digital noise to a PNG format file. The digital noise creates defects in an image that appear as randomly scattered pixels of random color and brightness throughout the image. In photo cameras, such noise looks something like sand granules. These noise grains are especially well seen in old movies. We invented an algorithm that artificially creates and adds such noise to any PNG image. The noise algorithm supports several types of digital noise. Each noise type creates different defects by superimposing random pixels on the PNG. In the "Random Pixel Noise" mode, the program picks random colors from the RGB spectrum and paints them over random pixels in the image. In the "Grayscale Pixel Noise" mode, only shades of white, black, and gray pixels are used. The "Similar Pixel Noise" mode changes the original pixels in the image, making slight color deviations. The "Local Pixel Noise" mode generates a color palette from all existing colors of the image, then randomly selects pixels from this palette, and applies them as noise. The "Custom Color Noise" mode uses colors from the list specified in the custom colors field. By default, only 10% of the PNG pixels get damaged by noise. You can increase or decrease the noise percentage in the "Noise Strength" option. To create the effect of an old photo, you can convert PNGs to grayscale before applying noise. As the PNG format supports the transparency and alpha channel, you can choose whether to apply noise to transparent areas or not. You can also control the alpha value of the transparent noise pixels by making them semi-transparent. Because noise is a random effect, the transparency is also determined randomly. The semi-transparent noise can be specified as a percent range from the minimum alpha percentage to the maximum alpha percentage. For example, if the range is 20% to 40%, then this utility will randomly set alpha channel values for pixels from 0.2 to 0.4. Png-abulous!

This example adds granularity to a PNG picture of a lemon on a blue background. It uses the "Similar Pixel Noise" method to achieve this effect. The method randomly deviates the existing pixel colors and creates similar random color tones. In total, 80% of the pixels in this PNG are affected by the noise. (Source: Pexels.)
In this example, we create a retro-style PNG photo of a UK phone booth. To immerse ourselves in the 20th-century atmosphere, we turn the PNG photo into grayscale. We choose the monochrome noise mode and add random gray tone pixels to 10% of the photo area. (Source: Pexels.)
In this example, we cover a PNG file with multicolor noise pixels. We switch on the random pixel color noise generator and repaint 15% of the pixels with random RGB colors. (Source: Pexels.)
This example uses the palette of existing colors found in the image to create a noisy PNG. The program takes the PNG palette, randomizes it, and then scatters the palette to random positions. As the noise level is 80%, to make sure the image still remains viewable, we make the noise pixels semi-transparent. The alpha channel of the noise pixels is varied between values 40% and 50%. In this example, we use our own noise pixel palette. We switch to the "Custom Color Noise" mode and enter three colors in the colors field. The colors are shades of cyan and they match cat eyes' colors: "turquoise", "cyan", and "aquamarine". As a result, cyan-shaded dots appear in random places on and around the cat. (Source: Pexels.)
In this example, we load a PNG illustration of a metal lamp post on a transparent background. We turn off the "Affect Transparent Areas" option and apply 100% noise of local pixels to the opaque regions of the illustration. In the output, we get the silhouette of the lamp post completely filled with pixels from the original PNG. (Source: Pexels.)
