This browser-based utility cleans the edges of a PNG image from unwanted pixels, outlines, and leftover colors from a previous background. It works with PNG images that already have their background removed and improves the clarity of object edges on a transparent background while preserving transparency. The cleaning process is divided into several stages. The basic cleaning creates a gradient transition along the edges, fading from opacity to transparency. This is useful when the edges of a PNG image appear rough or slightly jagged, and you want a natural, smooth fade into transparency. You can adjust the gradient transition radius to control the width of the fading effect. If you need a more precise cleanup, you can enable the hard edge cleaning option. Instead of fading pixels, it completely removes them, creating a sharp transparent border within the specified radius. For more precise control, you can turn on the extended edge cleaning mode. It selectively removes edge pixels that match a chosen color (for example, white or gray), even if those pixels are located deeper inside the object's contour. You can define the degree of color similarity using the color threshold and select one of two comparison methods: Basic RGB Distance or Perceptual Delta-E Match. The cleaning depth parameter determines the maximum distance inward from the edge that the pixel cleaning can reach. You can also choose to clean only the outer edges of the PNG, keeping the edges of any inner transparent areas (for example, the hole in a donut or the space between a person's arm and body) untouched. In this example, we clean a flower PNG where thin black edge pixels remain around white petals after the black background was removed. We apply a soft gradient clean-up with a radius of 1 px and a sharp clean-up of 5 px to eliminate the dark outlines and make the edges look smooth and transparent. (Source: Pexels.)
In this example, we apply a multi-step cleanup of green edge noise around a red panda PNG image. We combine standard "Gradient Edge Cleanup" and "Sharp Edge Cleanup" (both 2 px) with the "Extended Edge Cleanup" mode. By enabling this mode, setting the color for removal to "forestgreen", and using the "Perceptual Delta-E Match" algorithm with a color threshold of 25%, we precisely eliminate the green noise up to a depth of 20 pixels. We also disable the "Clean PNG Borders" option, since we don't want the pixels of the branch the panda is sitting on to be removed along the PNG borders. (Source: Pexels.)
In this example, we focus on removing leftover white paper pixels around a scanned signature. We trim 2 pixels from the signature's edges, enable extended cleanup with a high color threshold (85%) and Delta-E color matching, and set the cleanup depth to 50 pixels. The edge pixel color for the extended cleanup mode is determined automatically, based on the pixels removed during the sharp edge cleanup stage. Additionally, we make the edge semi-transparent within a smooth radius of 2 pixels. To clean not only the outer edge of the signature but also the inner areas, such as inside the letters "a", "d", and others, we disable the "Clean Outer Edges Only" option. (Source: Wikipedia.)
