What Is a PNG Edge Hardener?

This browser-based utility hardens the semi-transparent edges of PNG images. It can remove soft edges, undo feathering, and create hard edges, turning every translucent pixel into a fully opaque pixel. As a result, pixels that were previously barely visible become clearly visible, letting you preview how the PNG will look in workflows that require strict 1-bit transparency or in formats that don't support semi-transparency, such as GIF. This is also useful when creating old-school game sprites, pixel art, logos, icons, stamps, and other designs that should have a firm, pixel-sharp silhouette. The hardening process is controlled by a single alpha threshold option. Pixels with an alpha value greater than or equal to the specified threshold become fully opaque, while pixels below the threshold stay semi-transparent. The lower the alpha threshold, the more edge pixels are converted into hard opaque pixels. If the threshold is set to zero, then even fully transparent pixels become opaque black. If you want to completely get rid of semi-transparent edge pixels so they don't ruin the image on another background or in another format, then use our Convert Semi-Transparent PNG to Opaque tool. What Is a PNG Edge Hardener?

This browser-based utility hardens the semi-transparent edges of PNG images. It can remove soft edges, undo feathering, and create hard edges, turning every translucent pixel into a fully opaque pixel. As a result, pixels that were previously barely visible become clearly visible, letting you preview how the PNG will look in workflows that require strict 1-bit transparency or in formats that don't support semi-transparency, such as GIF. This is also useful when creating old-school game sprites, pixel art, logos, icons, stamps, and other designs that should have a firm, pixel-sharp silhouette. The hardening process is controlled by a single alpha threshold option. Make a Stamp Impression Fully Crisp

Expose a Hidden Yellow Outline Around a Strawberry

In this example, we harden the edges of the PNG to reveal hidden semi-transparent pixels that form a yellow outline around the strawberry. This faint halo can cause problems on certain backgrounds or in formats without semi-transparency support. Check a Bird PNG in a One-bit Transparency View

In this example, we inspect a PNG image in an extreme hardening mode by setting the alpha threshold to zero. This makes even fully transparent pixels opaque black and clearly shows that the transition area between the transparent background and the bird's feathers contains many colored semi-transparent pixels.
